AIFFP Invests $108 Million in Fiji’s Transport Infrastructure with Focus on Safety and Efficiency

More than $108 million is being invested in Fiji’s transport infrastructure across Viti Levu. The Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) affirmed their commitment to raising safety and efficiency standards in Fiji’s road maintenance and construction sectors.

According to AIFFP, the funding, which includes an estimated $22 million grant, aims to bolster Fiji’s road and bridge resilience. “The investment is not merely financial but strategic, supporting Fiji’s economic recovery post-pandemic and enhancing its climate defenses,” said the statement. “The partnership between AIFFP and Fiji Roads Authority is pivotal in achieving sustainable development goals and securing critical transport networks.”

One of the key initiatives under this investment is the implementation of the Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry course (CPCWHS1001). Developed in collaboration with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), this course provides Fijians with accredited construction safety credentials aligned with Australian standards. It equips workers with essential skills to identify hazards and implement safety protocols effectively.

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has embraced this initiative by mandating WHS certification for its road workers, including contractors. Moreover, the AIFFP’s approach emphasizes local employment and capacity-building. By partnering with local contractors and ensuring the majority of workers are Fijian nationals, the initiative not only improves safety but also supports local economic growth.

“Future plans for the Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry course include rolling out customized training on a mandatory basis for all road construction personnel, from casual workers to managers, to address the diverse risks present on construction sites. This training ensures everyone involved upholds the highest safety standards regarding both individual and collective well-being.”
