The Israeli military admitted on Monday that Palestinian civilians have been harmed at aid distribution centers in the Gaza Strip, prompting a review and new instructions for forces operating in the area. This acknowledgment follows the criticism surrounding the resumption of aid distribution after an 11-week blockade ended on May 19, which, according to the United Nations, has resulted in over 400 Palestinian fatalities while they sought humanitarian aid.

“Thorough examinations were conducted in the Southern Command, and instructions were issued to forces in the field”, stated an Israeli military spokesperson. The comments come after a report highlighted ongoing investigations into potential war crimes regarding claims that Israeli troops intentionally targeted civilians near these centers.

The military’s responses included a Times of Israel report indicating inaccurate artillery shelling during attempts to deter individuals from approaching specific zones near aid centers, which reportedly led to casualties. Israel has defended its military presence near these sites as a necessary measure to prevent aid from being misappropriated by the Hamas militant group.

Compounding the situation, a senior U.N. official described the U.S.-backed aid operation in Gaza as “inherently unsafe,” indicating the life-threatening environment for civilians attempting to collect aid. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that the current operational model of aid distribution was contributing to fatalities among those seeking assistance.

In light of escalating violence, many Gazans are traveling long distances to receive aid, often starting their journeys before dawn, only to encounter perilous conditions while waiting for supplies. While the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which began food distributions in late May, has reached significant milestones in meal deliveries, it has faced scrutiny for the effectiveness and neutrality of its operations amid allegations of militarization in aid delivery.

The situation in Gaza, exacerbated by the ongoing military campaign launched after Hamas’s attack on October 7, has seen over 56,000 Palestinian deaths, predominantly among civilians, alongside widespread infrastructure destruction. These figures underscore the essential need for international efforts to mediate the escalating humanitarian crisis.

Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, advocates emphasize the resilience of the Gazan population as they continue to seek assistance and call for greater international advocacy. As the airwaves echo with demands for humanitarian oversight, there remains hope that diplomatic engagement can lead to an improved aid landscape and pave the way toward lasting peace in the region.
