The Korovou family in Sigatoka has received assistance following significant damage to their home caused by a waterspout on January 9. Outgoing Minister for National Disaster Management Sakiusa Ditoka reported that a team of government officials and counselors visited the affected family last Saturday, delivering essential supplies and conducting assessments to gauge the extent of the damage.
During this visit, the team not only evaluated the situation but also coordinated with Empower Pacific to provide counseling for the family. Tarpaulins were distributed by representatives from the Nadroga Navosa Provincial Administrator’s office to help shield the family from the elements as they navigate this challenging time.
Ditoka noted that a detailed assessment of the damage, which will support further assistance requests, has been completed. He also highlighted the compassionate response from Shangri La Fijian Resort, which has pledged support for the rehabilitation of the damaged home.
However, opposition MP Vijay Nath criticized the government’s response, stating that the family, led by Desmond Dass, has been forced to live in unsafe conditions. Nath emphasized that the assistance provided thus far—basic tarpaulins—falls woefully short of what is needed for a proper recovery, especially given that the estimated repair costs exceed $50,000. He called for more meaningful support from the disaster response office, stressing the urgency of the situation.
The incident underscores the importance of timely and comprehensive disaster management responses to support families facing the aftermath of natural disasters. As the community rallies around the Korovou family, hopes are high for swift action to restore their home and wellbeing.
