The Government is charting a clear path for the next five years by placing a strong emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a fundamental element of the National Development Plan (NDP). This initiative seeks to bolster research, development, and innovation (RDI) within both the public and private sectors, equipping the nation to succeed in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).
RDI encompasses activities aimed at creating new products or enhancing existing technologies, while the Fourth Industrial Revolution represents the transformative impact of technologies like AI on industries and economies. The NDP highlights that current RDI efforts in both sectors are minimal and notes a general lack of understanding regarding the importance, benefits, and returns of RDI.
The plan asserts that as the Fourth Industrial Revolution unfolds, powered by digitalisation, Fiji must embrace and implement these technologies across all areas of its operation and development. By focusing on RDI and technology application, the government aims to enhance productivity, raise incomes, and generate high-value employment opportunities. This approach is essential for diversifying the economic landscape and strengthening resilience against external challenges.
To support this transition, the government intends to collaborate with the private sector in formulating policies and strategies conducive to RDI and technology adoption. Through consultations with private stakeholders, the government plans to establish and implement a comprehensive framework that promotes RDI and the adoption of innovative technologies.
The RDI initiatives will target strategic sectors aligned with national developmental priorities, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and services, as well as areas like environmental conservation and disaster risk management. Special emphasis will be placed on Artificial Intelligence and leveraging its advantages. The NDP indicates that the government aims to leverage new technologies to enhance economic performance and create better job opportunities by focusing on research and innovation.
