The Minister for Employment, Agni Deo Singh, has emphasized the significant role that artificial intelligence and digitalization play in enhancing workplace safety. While commemorating the 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Singh underlined the urgent need for proactive measures to confront emerging risks associated with the digital landscape. He referenced alarming statistics from the International Labour Organization (ILO), which report over 2.78 billion work-related deaths annually, stressing the importance of improving workplace safety in the face of rapid technological changes.

Singh advocated for the development of robust digital infrastructure, especially in rural areas, to support effective online occupational health and safety (OHS) systems. He asserted that enhancing digital literacy in the workplace is vital—particularly for small and medium enterprises that may not be familiar with advanced technologies. Regular evaluations of digital systems for effectiveness, accessibility, and real-time data provision are crucial as businesses adapt.

As part of the Ministry’s commitment to modernize OHS practices, Singh discussed strategies such as adopting a paperless approach for inspections and reports, transitioning to cashless systems, and improving service delivery through online platforms. These initiatives, built on the foundation of previous efforts like the recently launched Paperless Labour Inspection System, aim to streamline workplace inspections and improve overall efficiency.

Moreover, Singh has highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to refining workplace regulations and enhancing safety measures. The proposed revisions to health and safety regulations illustrate a desire to balance worker safety with business needs in a changing economic landscape.

Overall, these initiatives reflect a hopeful outlook on the future of workplace safety in Fiji. By fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration among all stakeholders, these efforts aim to cultivate a safer and more equitable working environment for everyone. The proactive measures being implemented demonstrate a clear commitment to worker welfare and sustainability.
