Agriculture Faces Staffing Crisis: How Will They Cope?

Assistant Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna has highlighted that several districts are still lacking adequate human resources. He emphasized that even with existing physical infrastructure and machinery, these areas may struggle to address the current challenges in agricultural production due to staff shortages.

“We are exploring strategies to retain our human resources, particularly surveyors and engineers,” he stated. The ministry is facing ongoing challenges related to the migration of staff abroad.

Mr. Tunabuna mentioned that there are various short training programs being implemented to enhance current capacity. Additionally, the ministry has begun re-recruiting retired staff members to mitigate the impact of the shortages.

“We are engaging officers, including some who have retired after reaching the age of 55, to help strengthen our team,” he said.

He noted that this issue extends beyond the agriculture ministry, affecting numerous other sectors as well.
