The Public Rental Board (PRB) has revealed that over 50 percent of its housing properties have surpassed the 25-year mark, leading to an urgent focus on structural assessments and maintenance strategies across the board. The General Manager of PRB, Timoci Naleba, expressed concern about the ageing state of the public rental housing, pointing out that many buildings have either reached or exceeded their intended lifespan.
“Initiating a maintenance programme is essential, and while we operate on a five-year cycle, we are also performing structural integrity assessments on buildings older than 25 years,” Naleba explained. Currently, about 50 percent of the PRB’s buildings fall into this category, and assessment efforts are already underway.
Of particular concern are the Mead Road PRB flats, which Naleba noted are a unique case, having far exceeded their original design life of 50 to 60 years.
In addition to addressing structural integrity, the PRB is also focusing on the housing needs of iTaukei families residing in urban areas. Naleba mentioned that discussions with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs have been initiated to explore potential collaboration aimed at providing urban housing assistance. “I have been invited next week to discuss this critical issue, enabling us to better assist iTaukei families who need housing,” he stated.
Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa echoed the concerns of the PRB, emphasizing the risks associated with residents living in aging and potentially unsafe buildings. He stressed the responsibility that falls on the PRB in the event of structural failure. “If anything happens tomorrow, the liability rests with the Public Rental Board,” he warned, highlighting the serious implications for public safety.
Nalumisa encouraged residents facing housing or safety issues to reach out for assistance. “I’m pleading with everyone, if you’re still having difficulties, come and see me regarding the issues you’re facing right now,” he urged, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling these pressing housing challenges.
This proactive stance by the PRB and the Ministry of Housing underscores a commitment to ensure safety and improve living conditions for residents, fostering a hopeful outlook for enhanced community support and infrastructure sustainability.
