Sanaila Duono, a 26-year-old player from Nalidi, Ra, embodies the spirit of perseverance and community in his pursuit of a national sevens rugby jumper. Competing for the PWD Bure team in the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, Duono expressed that age should not deter anyone from donning their national colors.

He emphasized the importance of local sevens competitions like the Nataleira 7s as vital platforms for rural teams, stating that such tournaments are open to all, representing the 14 provinces of Fiji. Duono took the initiative to recruit players from his village and nearby areas, showcasing a collaborative effort to build a strong team.

Despite facing challenges like training during the festive season and managing players’ commitments to family, Duono is optimistic about the potential of his teammates to eventually represent the national sevens team. He expressed gratitude to supporters and stakeholders who contribute to the team’s essentials, including food, transport, and registration costs.

Duono aims to not only highlight the players’ talents but also to personally enhance his fitness and preparation for upcoming tournaments. Acknowledging past injuries, he remains focused on the future, stating that improvement in communication and discipline is necessary following their initial match loss to Gau Kacau.

Inspired by fellow villager and former national sevens representative Iliesa Nadai, Duono reflects a hopeful narrative of determination and ambition in the world of rugby. His journey serves as a reminder that with support and hard work, dreams can be pursued regardless of age or setbacks.

Overall, Duono’s story is a testament to the strength of community and the idea that sports can unite and uplift individuals from various backgrounds. His positive outlook emphasizes the journey over immediate results, encouraging both players and supporters to keep striving for greatness.
