At the age of 76, Iliesa Samulala stands as a testament to the belief that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s dreams. With a steadfast conviction that opportunities arise in their own time, he has continuously demonstrated that courage and determination are key to achievement. This December, he made history by becoming the first Fijian to earn a PhD in Philosophy from Christ University of the Pacific.

Samulala’s journey has transcended personal accomplishment; it embodies a deeper mission to serve his community. He acknowledges the complexities of life while emphasizing the importance of adapting to changes and finding a comfortable balance. In his own words, “We need to look at the advantages and the pitfalls, balance it out, so that we can do it comfortably.”

His doctoral research delved into the intricate relationships between culture, church, family, and technology, particularly in relation to indigenous identity and wellbeing. He advocates for revitalizing language, fortifying family structures, and nurturing meaningful leadership within the church, all while navigating the challenges posed by a rapidly digitizing world.

Samulala highlights a critical issue: when young people feel neglected in their homes or communities, they often search for solace and acceptance in less secure spaces, which can lead to detrimental outcomes. His insights serve as a timely reminder of the need for supportive environments that foster connection and identity.

Through his academic accomplishments and advocacy for community values, Iliesa Samulala inspires others to embrace lifelong learning and the pursuit of knowledge, regardless of age. His achievements not only enrich his own life but also provide a roadmap for future generations to follow.
