Peniana Matai is carving out a successful career as a market vendor despite facing tough competition. Three years ago, she made a bold decision to leave her job as a casual worker and join the vibrant Suva Municipal Market. As the primary provider for her family, which includes her husband and four children, this choice came with challenges, but Matai has embraced the opportunity it offers.

“My experience as a vendor has introduced me to wonderful people and opened many doors,” she shared. On busy days, her earnings can reach up to $300, significantly surpassing her previous income of $150 every two weeks. However, the market is not without its difficulties; seafood prices fluctuate monthly, influenced by high demand and the challenges of sourcing fresh products like sea grapes and crabs. Currently, customers can find sea grapes priced between $2 and $5, based on portion size, while crabs cooked in coconut milk are available for $5.

In the same market, Tokasa Wati is another shining example of success. With over a decade of experience in selling produce, Wati has transformed her life through farming. Originally from Lomai Vuna in the Naitasiri highlands, she started her journey with watermelons and later expanded into dalo farming, earning up to an astonishing $3,000 per week during peak seasons. Her four-acre farm, located a four-hour truck ride from her village, also produces corn, pumpkins, and various green vegetables.

Wati attributes her success to farming, stating, “This income has allowed me to send all four of my children to school and cover family expenses.” She passionately encourages young people to utilize their land to create a viable future. “Every iTaukei person owns land, so there’s no excuse not to make money. If academics aren’t your strength, look at what’s around you,” she advises. Wati’s bundles of dalo are sold for $20 to $30, and her journey of resilience serves as an inspiration to many aspiring entrepreneurs.

The stories of both Matai and Wati highlight the immense potential within local markets and the significant impact of entrepreneurial spirit on families and communities. Their determination and adaptability reflect a hopeful future for vendors and farmers alike, encouraging others to explore opportunities in their surroundings.
