Against All Odds: Meet the Nursing Superstar Redefining Age Limitations

Ema Bi, at the age of 46, has set a remarkable example of resilience, showcasing that ambition knows no age limits. A mother of two, a widow, and a committed nurse practitioner from Tuatua, Labasa, she was the highlight of the TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education graduation ceremony, where she achieved a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Leadership and Management.

During the event, Ms. Bi stood out by receiving six esteemed awards, including the prestigious Overall Academic Excellence. Her achievements extend to excelling in critical courses, such as Nursing Leadership in the 21st Century and Strategic Management in Nursing.

In a heartfelt reflection on her journey, Ms. Bi shared the difficulties she faced following the death of her husband, Ashad Ali, who was her greatest supporter. She recalled his encouragement to chase her dreams and his desire to see her graduate.

While managing her postgraduate studies alongside a Master of Business Administration (MBA), she acknowledged the vital role of her mentor, Selina Waqa Ledua of the Fiji National Council, as well as the steadfast support from her family and friends. “I keep reminding myself that this is not the end of the road. With a positive mindset, anything is possible,” Ms. Bi affirmed.

Having dedicated 24 years to the nursing profession, she views it as the most rewarding career, allowing her to positively impact people’s lives. Ms. Bi aspires to become a chief nurse and encourages others to aim high. “To mothers and widows, I say, never give up. Age is just a number, and God has given us one life to live. Make it count,” she asserted.
