Joseva Maikitu Ravula, a 34-year-old from Seaqaqa on Vanua Levu, achieved a significant personal milestone by graduating today with a Bachelor of Applied Social Science from Fiji National University (FNU). His journey is one marked by determination, sacrifice, and the support of family and friends.
Joseva’s path was not straightforward. He had to leave school during his fourth year to care for his mother during a difficult pregnancy, allowing his younger siblings to continue their education. “My mother was having pregnancy complications at the time. As one of the eldest, I had to sacrifice my future for my younger siblings,” he reflected, adding that he has no regrets about his decision.
Despite facing such early challenges, Joseva remained committed to his education and community service. He volunteered for nine years with the Fiji Red Cross Society and currently works with Live and Learn Environmental Education Fiji. His dedication to humanitarian efforts inspired him to return to education as a mature student at FNU, which he found accommodating to his work schedule. “FNU was the right choice. It was flexible, allowing me to complete my studies in three years,” he said.
Joseva attributes his success to the unwavering belief and support from his family and colleagues, stating, “Without their encouragement and belief in me, this wouldn’t have been possible.” His graduation not only symbolizes a personal achievement but also serves as a beacon of hope for others striving to overcome adversity.
Similar to other graduates from the region, Joseva’s story echoes themes of resilience and support in educational journeys. For instance, Semi Seruvakula, a young man from Navutu Village, also faced significant obstacles like peer pressure but successfully secured a certification in Fabrication and Welding. His journey, along with others, illustrates that perseverance and community support are vital in achieving one’s educational dreams.
Joseva Maikitu Ravula’s triumph underscores the importance of determination and resilience in the face of challenges. His journey encourages others to continue pursuing their dreams, reminding us that with support and hard work, success can be achieved against all odds.
