Ema Bi, a 46-year-old widow and mother of two from Tuatua, Labasa, has achieved remarkable success, demonstrating that age is no barrier to perseverance. At the recent graduation ceremony from the TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education, she earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Leadership and Management and was honored with six prestigious awards, including Overall Academic Excellence.
Currently working at the Labasa Health Centre, Ms. Bi excelled in several subjects, showcasing her talent, particularly in Nursing Leadership in the 21st Century and Strategic Management in Nursing. Reflecting on her journey, she shared the challenges she faced following the death of her husband, Ashad Ali, who had always supported her educational aspirations. “He always encouraged me to pursue whatever course I wanted and dreamed of seeing me graduate,” she said.
While juggling her postgraduate studies, Ms. Bi is also working towards a Master of Business Administration (MBA). She attributes her success to her mentor, Selina Waqa Ledua from the Fiji National Council, as well as her family and friends who provided steadfast encouragement. “I keep reminding myself that this is not the end of the road. With a positive mindset, anything is possible,” she noted.
With 24 years of nursing experience, Ms. Bi views her profession as a vital means of impacting people’s lives and aspires to become a chief nurse. She has an inspiring message for fellow mothers and widows: “Never give up. Age is just a number, and God has given us one life to live. Make it count.”
