Fiji weightlifter Daniel Shaw expressed his gratitude after securing a bronze medal in the junior 81kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, following a four-month recovery from an injury.
In an interview, the 19-year-old revealed his goal was to achieve a silver medal. “I’m pretty happy that I’ve won bronze despite aiming for silver in my last attempt, and it’s God’s plan,” he said. Shaw is now looking forward to competing in the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.
He faced challenges competing after an elbow injury he sustained during the Oceania Championship in Auckland. “I tore a ligament in my elbow and was sidelined for four months, but I started to regain my strength,” he shared. By May, he was able to lift again and has been training since then for this championship.
Shaw acknowledged the need for more time and personal focus moving forward. He extended his thanks to the president of Weightlifting Fiji, Della Shaw-Elder, and head coach Henry Elder for their trust in his ability to return to competition post-injury. He also expressed gratitude towards his team for their continual support and positive mindset during preparations.
Observing his competitors at the CWC, Shaw mentioned his commitment to putting in extra effort. “I just have to stay consistent, listen to my coaches, and everything will fall into place. I’d like to encourage young people to listen to their parents because everything starts from home.”
