Against All Odds: A Single Mother’s Journey to Success

Luisa Radovu, a dedicated single mother of four, has faced numerous challenges throughout her life but continues to be a strong provider for her family. After leaving school in sixth grade, she encountered hardships including disownment by her family and navigating four unsuccessful marriages. Despite these obstacles, Radovu fought tirelessly to improve her circumstances.

She has held various jobs, including housemaid and baker, and pursued her passion for maritime studies, earning multiple sailing certificates. Radovu funded her own education and gained experience working in various resorts during her younger years, which helped her overcome her struggles.

Currently, the 55-year-old operates a canteen business in Wailoku, which she established in 2017 to serve the local community. In addition, she offers food parcels and pastries at the Suva market when possible.

“I only reached class six in education, but I managed to get into Fiji National University for maritime studies. I signed myself up and paid for my own fees, graduating with five certificates,” Radovu explained. She added that her early employment included roles in cafes and restaurants as a cook and baker.

Radovu participated in the Start Improve Your Business (SIYB) training provided by the Ministry of Trade, which significantly helped her through tough times. “To be honest, there were moments when I lost hope in my business due to the pressure. However, the training instilled in me the confidence and skills needed to move forward,” she said. “It also enhanced my ability to serve my customers better.”

Looking to the future, Radovu aims to expand her business and dreams of opening a larger shop that will be more accessible to community members. She is currently awaiting a government grant from the training she completed, hoping it will provide the financial boost she needs to elevate her business further.
