Fiji’s Junior Vonu Under-17 full forward, Makayla Sukhu, is inspired to emulate her mother, Vilisi Sukhu, a pioneer of the women’s Fiji Vonu team established in 2014, as she pursues a career in Australian Rules Football (AFL).
Makayla credits her mother as the driving force behind her interest in the sport. “AFL is a different sport, and my mum was the main reason why I took up this sport because she represented Fiji,” she remarked. Passionate about AFL from a young age, she recognizes that teamwork and endurance are essential elements of the game. “AFL brings out key factors, as it combines various skills,” she added.
She also expresses a desire to see her sister take part in the sport, aspiring for its development in Fiji. Makayla believes that although AFL can be challenging initially, it is ultimately rewarding. “My mum always advises me to keep pushing hard, focusing on my goals, and supporting my teammates,” she said.
Aside from her aspirations in AFL, Sukhu recently achieved the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title during the 45th World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, scoring 3.5 out of 7 as the youngest participant among competitors from 193 countries. In addition to chess, she also plays netball for Suva Grammar School and the Lomaiviti club, balancing her sporting commitments with her academic responsibilities.
Makayla emphasizes the importance of sports as a means to manage stress and maintain a healthy mindset amidst her schoolwork. She expresses gratitude for the support from her parents, acknowledging their role in her achievements in AFL and beyond.
In conclusion, Makayla Sukhu’s journey serves as an inspiring story of ambition and resilience, highlighting the importance of family support and the drive to excel in multiple areas, showcasing the potential for growth in sports like AFL in Fiji.
