Makayla Sukhu, a full forward for the Fiji Junior Vonu Under-17 team, is eager to make her mark in Australian Football League (AFL), inspired by her mother, Vilisi Sukhu, a member of Fiji’s inaugural women’s AFL team in 2014. “AFL is a different sport, and my mum was the main reason why I took up this sport because she represented Fiji,” she shared, revealing her long-standing passion for the game since childhood.

Sukhu emphasizes the importance of teamwork and endurance in AFL and has a strong desire to promote the sport among young athletes, especially encouraging her sister to participate. She believes in the potential for AFL to thrive in Fiji, describing it as a multi-skill and challenging sport that can bring out the best in players.

In addition to her commitment to AFL, Sukhu recently excelled at the 45th World Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, where she earned the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title, scoring 3.5 out of 7 as the youngest competitor among participants from 193 countries. Her versatility extends beyond chess and AFL, as she also competes in netball for Suva Grammar School and the Lomaiviti club.

Balancing academics and sports can be challenging, but Sukhu recognizes the positive impact sports have on her well-being. “Sport is good as it gives you peace of mind and relieves your stress from schoolwork,” she stated. She is grateful for the unwavering support of her parents, attributing her successes to their encouragement and divine guidance.

As Sukhu continues her journey in sports, she embodies the spirit of perseverance and commitment, offering hope for the future growth of AFL in Fiji and inspiring the next generation of athletes to pursue their passions.

In summary, Makayla Sukhu is not just a budding athlete in AFL; she’s also a talented chess player and dedicated student, illustrating that with hard work, supportive family, and a passion for sports, anyone can achieve their dreams. Her story is a celebration of both personal determination and the potential for sports to bring communities together.
