Sugarcane farmers in Fiji are benefiting from newly introduced affordable healthcare options through the Sugar Cane Growers’ Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program. This initiative, revealed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad at the inauguration of a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi, marks a significant step in supporting the roughly 10,500 active cane growers in the region.

Professor Prasad underscored the government’s commitment to improving access to healthcare services for the farming community, particularly in rural areas. He stated, “This partnership with PSH ensures that farmers have access to affordable healthcare and demonstrates our commitment to improving health services.”

The SCGF Loyalty Program is more than just healthcare access; it reflects an ongoing effort to modernize Fiji’s healthcare infrastructure. This includes initiatives such as the creation of a new 100-bed super-specialty hospital funded by the Indian Government and upgrades to existing facilities like the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.

Parvish Kumar, the CEO of PSH, emphasized the program’s potential to significantly uplift the overall well-being of sugarcane farmers, who contribute significantly to Fiji’s economy. By leveraging the collective buying power of the farming community, the program seeks to provide quality medical services at reduced rates, ensuring that these farmers are adequately rewarded for their hard work.

Moreover, plans are underway to extend the program to additional regions, including Labasa, enhancing outreach efforts in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative aims not just to enhance healthcare access but also to raise awareness about wellness among sugarcane farmers.

In summary, the SCGF Loyalty Program is a beacon of hope for Fiji’s agricultural sector. By providing affordable healthcare options and recognizing the essential role of sugarcane farmers, the government and PSH are fostering a healthier community while bolstering the economic viability of this critical industry. This partnership represents a proactive approach to ensuring that those who feed the nation can lead healthier lives, thereby reinforcing their valuable contribution to Fiji’s prosperity.
