The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has successfully concluded its participation in Operation Kuru Kuru, an initiative aimed at combating illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing in the Pacific. This operation emphasizes the collaborative efforts of various nations to safeguard the exclusive economic zones of Pacific Island countries.

In support of this mission, the ADF deployed a C-27J Spartan and a KA350 King Air aircraft, operating from locations including Vanuatu, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, and most recently, Fiji. Thus far, their efforts have complemented the Australian Navy’s ongoing support to the Forum Fisheries Agency’s (FFA) Operation 365, which involves frequent naval operations across the Southwest Pacific.

Vice Admiral Justin Jones, Commander of Joint Operations, underscored the importance of collaboration, stating, “We are at our best when we work together as a Pacific family, to face joint challenges together.” The ADF’s involvement in Operation Kuru Kuru is part of its broader commitment to maritime surveillance in the region, known as Operation Solania.

This initiative represents a positive stride toward ensuring the sustainability of Pacific marine resources, vital for the livelihoods of many communities in the region. With ongoing cooperation and commitment, there is hope for more effective measures against illegal fishing practices in the Pacific moving forward.
