Adele thwarted sale of ‘haunted’ £6m house

Adele’s Haunting Claims: A £6m Mansion’s Sales Curse?

Award-winning singer Adele is facing allegations from the owners of a £6 million mansion she previously rented, claiming her comments during an interview impacted the property’s sale. The owners assert that Adele suggested the 10-bedroom Grade II-listed Lock House in Partridge Green, West Sussex, was haunted, which they believe has deterred potential buyers.

Adele rented the mansion for six months in 2012, and her mention of feeling creeped out at the house during a CBS interview with Anderson Cooper—though she did not explicitly use the term “haunted”—has since become a sticking point in the owners’ efforts to sell the property. They argue that her remarks have negatively affected the house’s reputation and hindered marketing efforts, stating, “The first tenant, Adele, stayed for six months and blighted the property by saying it is haunted.”

Despite the property’s historical charm and vast amenities, including an indoor and outdoor pool, a tennis court, and a cinema room, the current owners claim they’ve struggled to find buyers for about 14 years. Notably, the only offer received in August 2020 was withdrawn after the potential buyer learned of its supposedly haunted reputation.

The owners are now seeking planning permission to convert Lock House into three residential units and turn an existing garage into a separate cottage, a move they hope will revitalize interest in the property. Originally built around 1909 and converted into a convent before being sold again, Lock House has a rich history that they believe could attract new residents.

This situation not only highlights the challenges of selling properties with notable celebrity connections but also raises questions about the implications of public comments on real estate ventures. As the owners navigate the complex landscape of real estate marketing and reputation management, there remains hope that they will find a suitable buyer who can appreciate the unique qualities of Lock House without the baggage of past associations.

In summary, the circumstances surrounding Lock House demonstrate the intricate ties between celebrity influence and real estate desirability, emphasizing the importance of managing public perceptions in the real estate market.
