Addiction is often misunderstood as a personal failure, but according to Reverend Hemraj Mangal, the executive director of Adult Teen Challenge Fiji, it is a chronic disorder. Speaking at the Vodafone Coral Coast Carnival in Sigatoka, he emphasized the widespread impact of addiction, which affects men, women, and children alike. Mr. Mangal highlighted the detrimental effects of addiction, which include the disruption of families and communities, overcrowded prisons, and the loss of innocence among children.
He noted that addictions vary widely, encompassing dependencies on mobile phones, social media, gambling, alcohol, kava, drugs, and other substances. Mr. Mangal shared a poignant observation about families dining out, mentioning how they often become absorbed in their phones rather than engaging with one another.
While acknowledging the serious consequences of addiction, he provided a hopeful perspective by stating that most forms of addiction are treatable. The crucial first step toward recovery, he asserted, is recognizing the problem and having a genuine desire to change.
This message underscores the importance of compassion and understanding in addressing addiction, highlighting that acknowledging a problem is the foundation of recovery. With the right support and determination, individuals can overcome these challenges and rebuild their lives and relationships.
