The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced its new country partnership strategy (CPS) for Fiji, focusing on enhancing the country’s resilience to economic and climate-related challenges from 2024 to 2028. According to ADB Director General for the Pacific, Leah Gutierrez, the partnership will align ADB’s support with Fiji’s newly launched National Development Plan for 2025-2029.

This strategy aims to build on existing ADB assistance in key areas such as strengthening public finances, improving infrastructure and services, and fostering a greener and more diverse private sector. Gutierrez emphasized a prioritization of support for public sector management, development of climate-resilient transport infrastructure, and enhancement of urban water and wastewater services.

The CPS will also address emerging needs in coastal protection for at-risk communities, upgrading national healthcare facilities, and speeding up Fiji’s transition to renewable energy sources. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, highlighted the strategy’s reflection of the strong partnership between the Fijian Government and ADB, ensuring that future support is closely aligned with the National Development Plan.

Over the past five decades, ADB has been a significant partner for Fiji, providing 117 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance amounting to $991 million since 1970.
