The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has unveiled its new country partnership strategy (CPS) for Fiji, covering the period from 2024 to 2028. The focus will be on enhancing public sector management, improving access to climate-resilient transport infrastructure, and ensuring sustainable urban water and wastewater services.
The Manila-based organization highlighted key areas of intervention, including coastal protection for at-risk communities, the modernization of national healthcare facilities, and the acceleration of Fiji’s renewable energy transition. Leah Gutierrez, ADB’s Director General for the Pacific, stated that this CPS will enhance ongoing efforts to promote resilient public finances, quality infrastructure and services, and a more environmentally sustainable and diverse private sector.
The five-year strategy aims to support Fiji in enhancing its climate and disaster resilience through innovative financing, infrastructure upgrades, climate policy reforms, and increased access to concessional climate finance. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad emphasized that the strategy represents a collaborative effort between the Fijian government and ADB, aligning future investments with Fiji’s National Development Plan for 2025-2029.
Key priorities of the CPS include encouraging private sector investment, advancing gender equality, and promoting regional cooperation and integration. Since 1970, ADB has been a significant partner for Fiji, committing 117 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling $991 million.
