The Pacific region is poised to gain greater autonomy in shaping its development framework with the recent inauguration of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Pacific headquarters in Suva, Fiji. The office, situated on the top two floors of the FHL Tower in the city’s central business district, was officially opened by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who emphasized the bank’s reinforced commitment to Fiji and the broader Pacific region.

Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted that this new establishment signifies a clear message of the ADB’s prominent role in pivotal developmental partnerships with Fiji and its Pacific neighbors. He expressed that the headquarters embodies a renewed commitment to a collaborative vision for a resilient, prosperous, and sustainable Pacific.

For over 50 years, the ADB has been a steadfast partner to Fiji, contributing to various sectors including transport infrastructure, renewable energy, and water and sanitation projects. Rabuka reflected on the historical support provided by the ADB during critical moments, such as the financial and technical assistance offered in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston a decade ago, which wreaked havoc across the nation. He also noted the bank’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, which included budget support that helped stabilize the economy and protect livelihoods.

ADB President Masato Kanda remarked that the Pacific is characterized not by its physical distance but by the collective determination of its people. He expressed gratitude to the Fijian government for their warm welcome. Secretary General Baron Waqa underscored that the new office formalizes a mutual commitment to delivering solutions led by the Pacific, with a focus on resilience, connectivity, and climate and development finance.

The strategic establishment of the ADB’s headquarters signals not only ongoing support but also a shared aspiration for a sustainable future in the Pacific region. The collaborative efforts hinted by this inauguration could herald a new chapter of resilience and growth for Pacific nations, as they navigate the challenges of our times.
