Beyond the headline

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a fresh bulletin warning that a trough of low pressure will continue to produce unsettled weather across the islands through the weekend. In its advisory released at 5:30am, the bureau forecast occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms for most parts of the country and warned that “isolated heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying areas.”

The update, which reiterates the presence of the active trough already flagged in earlier forecasts, also cautioned that moderate northwest winds and moderate seas are expected while conditions persist. Forecasters said similar showers and thunderstorms are likely on Sunday, with the system forecast to gradually ease later in the day — though localized heavy downpours could still trigger flash flooding in flood-prone communities.

This bulletin serves as the latest development in a run of warnings issued over the past days as the trough moved across the region. Earlier national alerts had flagged an elevated risk of heavy rain affecting large parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, and nearby island groups; today’s advisory narrows the immediate threats to frequent showers and isolated storms with the potential for intense, localized rainfall and sudden inundation in low-lying areas.

Authorities are urging residents, particularly those living in flood-prone or low-lying locations, to remain vigilant and take precautions. The public has been reminded to monitor updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service and to heed any directions from local disaster management officials, especially where flash flooding could cut access routes or affect homes and infrastructure.

Maritime users should note the forecast of moderate seas and shifting northwest winds while the trough remains in place. The Met Service’s bulletin underscores the importance of planning for weather-related disruptions over the weekend and advises people to prepare for isolated heavy rainfall events even as a general easing is expected toward the end of Sunday.
