A 49-year-old man facing charges related to the alleged rape and sexual assault of his 13-year-old niece is set to retake his plea in a case that has drawn significant attention. The accused appeared before Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu at the High Court in Suva, where he faces multiple charges, including four counts of sexual assault, and single counts of rape and indecent assault.

According to court proceedings, the victim visited her uncle’s home to return a belonging that belonged to his daughter. It was during this visit that the alleged offenses took place. The victim’s mother promptly reported the incident to the Vunidawa Police Station, leading to the ongoing legal process.

During the court session, the Director of Public Prosecutions was expected to present the summary of facts and initiate sentencing. However, the defense indicated that revisions to the charge sheet were necessary, which must be resolved before proceeding with factual presentations. Consequently, the court deferred the mitigation and sentencing hearing until after the plea is re-stated.

The accused remains in custody, with the next court date scheduled for December 12.

The case underscores the importance of ensuring that legal proceedings are handled thoroughly and justly. It also highlights the courage of victims and their families in seeking justice, which remains essential in combating such serious crimes in society. The upcoming court date provides an opportunity for further developments in this significant matter.
