The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has implemented significant changes to its events leading up to the Oscars in response to the devastating wildfires affecting Los Angeles. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed their deep sorrow over the impact of the fires on the community, stating, “We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community.”

In light of the ongoing crisis, the Academy has extended the Oscar nomination voting period until January 17 at 5:00 PM PST, which was originally set for January 12 and then moved to January 14 following the outbreak of the fires. The announcement for the Oscar nominations will now occur on January 23 at 5:30 AM PST and will be conducted virtually without any in-person media coverage.

Other changes include the cancellation of the Oscars Nominees Luncheon planned for February 10, and the date for the Scientific and Technical Awards, initially set for February 18, will be announced later. Despite these adjustments, the 97th Oscars ceremony will still take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood.

In their heartfelt joint statement, Kramer and Yang emphasized the importance of community support during these times of hardship. They also highlighted plans to honor frontline workers involved in firefighting efforts and provide support to those impacted by the tragedies.

The Academy’s proactive measures not only underline their commitment to celebrating artistic achievements but also reflect a larger trend of solidarity seen within various communities responding to natural disasters. Such adaptations emphasize the resilience of the film industry and its dedication to uplift and support those affected.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the wildfires, there remains a hopeful spirit of recovery and solidarity, suggesting that together, they can navigate these challenges and emerge stronger. The emphasis on unity and recovery initiatives serves as a reminder of the compassion that can prevail even amidst adversity.
