Ablaze Hearts netball club is set to embark on an international adventure, as they depart for Australia tomorrow to compete in a prestigious club tournament. Leading the club is president and coach Filomena Korovulavula, who underscores the significance of the tour as a continuation of the vision set forth by the late Moape Vu Ravudolo, a pivotal figure in the club’s history who organized their first overseas trip before his passing in 2021.
“This was our plan from last year, and after Ravudolo passed, I am continuing from where he left off. We are fortunate to have support to make it happen,” Korovulavula expressed. The club, boasting four participating teams, will compete in the tournament hosted by the Pimpama United Netball Association in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, alongside teams from South Africa, England, and other nations.
With 60 girls traveling, including players from under-13, under-15, and under-18 teams, many participants will experience air travel for the first time. “Netball has given them a way to travel and see more of the world,” Korovulavula stated, highlighting the enriching opportunities provided through the sport.
The journey has been made possible with generous sponsorship from the Chinese Embassy, contributing $5000 towards the tour, illustrating how sports have the ability to unite people across borders. Korovulavula added, “Their support means a lot, and it shows how sports can bring people together.”
Parents will accompany the teams, accompanied by their shared experience of playing under Korovulavula’s guidance for many years. The trip aims to create a strong foundation for the players’ confidence and inspiration for their futures. “This is good development for the young girls,” she said. “They are really looking forward to this experience.”
Ablaze Hearts is set to face exciting challenges, building on their previous achievements, including their recent success in the Suva Netball Association, where they made significant strides under Korovulavula’s mentorship. The club is dedicated to not only competition but nurturing the next generation of athletes.
