Abandoned Hope: Why Is Lautoka’s Abuse Shelter Still Closed?

A newly constructed shelter in Natabua, Lautoka, designed to provide a safe haven for abuse victims, has yet to open its doors two years after its completion. The facility, financed by Soroptimist International, represents an investment of nearly $500,000. Concern has arisen within the organization regarding the delayed opening of the shelter, which has been under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection since its establishment.

Sooman Lal, the former president of SI Federation Fiji, expressed frustrations over the situation, noting the pressing need for such resources. “Our main concern is that we have this shelter available for victims of abuse, but it is just sitting there,” she commented. The Lautoka Hospital has reached out seeking assistance for women and children requiring shelter, highlighting the urgent demand for the service.

While the Ministry indicated that a tender to manage the shelter was awarded in February 2023, there has been no movement towards operationalizing the facility. Despite the significant community investment and the shelter being one of the largest initiatives by SI South-West Pacific, it remains unmanned, raising disappointment among those involved in its creation.

Attempts to obtain a response from Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, have not been answered.

This situation underscores the need for efficient communication and action between organizations dedicated to supporting vulnerable populations and government bodies responsible for those services. It also reminds us of the critical importance of swiftly addressing the needs of abuse victims, ensuring they have access to essential resources like shelters.

In the face of these challenges, there is hope that the shelter will soon open, providing invaluable support to those in need. The investment made by Soroptimist International serves as a reminder of the community’s commitment to tackling domestic abuse and supporting survivors. With effective collaboration and urgency, this shelter can transform into a beacon of hope for many facing adversity.
