Abandoned and Alone: The Heartbreaking Case of Raijieli Waqavolau

In June 1998, authorities in Fiji were searching for the parents of a disabled girl who had been left to fend for herself in their home, leading to serious concerns over her well-being. Seventeen-year-old Raijieli Waqavolau had been abandoned by her parents when they left for Suva a few weeks prior without providing her with food or water.

On June 7, police learned about her situation after a neighbor, who made a friendly visit, discovered her alone in her house located in Garampani, 12 kilometers from Tavua. Social Welfare Officer Kolinio Ulakia was informed of the girl’s condition following a report from community nurses, prompting an immediate investigation.

Raijieli, who was found in a vulnerable state, unable to walk or stand, had been living in darkness and confinement. She stated that her parents had not returned, and she had not received any assistance from relatives. Social Welfare officers expressed serious concerns about her safety, particularly given that her home was situated in an area known for criminal activity.

Upon visiting, Ulakia confirmed Raijieli had been neglected and was without any means of sustenance. With no food or water available in her house, he managed to locate the key and provide her with essential supplies. Although he reached out to her family, no one had come forward to help her at the time.

Neighbors began visiting Raijieli to provide her with food and water, as it was reported that she had not eaten for several days. The Social Welfare Department pledged to assist her while also taking steps to ensure her protection.

Local police chief ASP Isimeli Waikelokelo indicated that efforts were underway to locate Raijieli’s parents, who were believed to be in Nasinu but were expected to return to Tavua that day for questioning. It remained unclear whether any charges would be filed against them for their neglect.
