The village of Nabavatu, located by the Dreketi River, has faced tremendous hardships since being struck by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021. Before the cyclone, about 38 families relied on agriculture and fishing for their livelihoods. However, the storm devastated the area, displacing the entire community and forcing residents to live in tents.

The transition from a peaceful rural life to enduring challenges in temporary shelters has been difficult for the villagers. Having lived in these tents for nearly four years, they have faced various weather conditions, from cold nights to extreme heat, exacerbating their living situations. Over time, these temporary accommodations have become deteriorated, raising concerns about health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.

Despite numerous visits from leaders and attempts at planning relocation, many families are still waiting for the government’s promise to provide new housing. The villagers hope to move into a new site where 37 houses are planned. They are now approaching the fifth anniversary of living in tents, a situation that has tested their resilience and faith.

The community has shown remarkable solidarity during this time. Villagers have supported one another by sharing meals, spaces, and resources. Women in the village have taken on various roles, from selling produce and fish to pursuing handicrafts, like mat weaving, to support their families financially.

Inspirational stories of hope and perseverance have emerged from this community. Despite the challenges, local children continue to pursue education, with many progressing from primary to tertiary levels, supported by their teachers. The importance of community spirit and faith has been a guiding force for the villagers, enabling them to endure hardships together.

Looking ahead, Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Ditoka confirmed that a tender process for the construction of new houses is underway. Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that every process is followed correctly to avoid further delays.

The determination of the residents of Nabavatu to maintain their community spirit and support one another through adversity is truly commendable. As the government moves forward with its promise of housing, there is a renewed sense of hope among the villagers that a brighter future is ahead.

Summary: The villagers of Nabavatu have faced tremendous challenges since Tropical Cyclone Ana displaced them in early 2021. Living in tents for nearly four years has brought about deteriorating living conditions, yet the community has demonstrated resilience, supporting each other through shared experiences and values. With plans for new housing underway, there is hope for a brighter future for the families of Nabavatu.
