Families from Koro in Levuka, Lomaiviti, gathered with great anticipation for the arrival of Goundar Shipping Limited’s MV Captain Inoke, an event marked by deep emotions and a sense of community. For the Ratotodro family, this occasion held special significance as the vessel was named in memory of their late father, Captain Inoke Ratotodro.
Melaia Ratotodro, his eldest daughter, expressed her heartfelt emotions as she watched the ship dock at Port Mua-i-Walu, reflecting on her father’s legacy. “Our dad, who devoted over 30 years to Goundar Shipping Limited, passed away last October, and this tribute is a meaningful way to honor him,” she shared. Despite their loss, the family was grateful for the company’s recognition of his contributions.
George Goundar, the managing director, reminisced about his friendship with Mr. Ratotodro, emphasizing the significant role he played in the company’s early days. “When I launched Goundar Shipping in 2011, he was instrumental in providing support and guidance,” Goundar said. “He handled many aspects of the business, particularly those related to Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, while I focused on engineering.”
The MV Captain Inoke is now under the command of Sainimere Qutonilaba, a talented 31-year-old, who began her journey with Goundar Shipping as a cadet in 2011. Over the years, she has played a key role in bringing new vessels from abroad to the company. The event also featured a traditional ceremony to celebrate the ship’s arrival before attendees were invited to tour the vessel.
This touching tribute not only honors a dedicated seafarer but also highlights the strong bonds of friendship and respect within the maritime industry. The story of Captain Inoke Ratotodro serves as a reminder of the impact one individual can have on their community and the legacy they leave behind.
This event showcases the resilience and spirit of families coming together to remember loved ones while embracing new beginnings, reminding us all to celebrate life and legacy in meaningful ways.
