This Christmas is shaping up to be particularly special for Kelevi Cavuduadua, a villager from Natubuniqio in Vugalei, as he welcomes his eldest son, Peniasi Kaloukocei Apisai, back home after a two-year stint in Australia. Peniasi will be returning with a remarkable gift: a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the prestigious Australian National University (ANU).
This achievement marks a significant milestone as Peniasi is the first person from his village to earn such a qualification, a point of immense pride for his father, who considers it the best gift he could receive this holiday season. “Our children are reaping the rewards of investing in higher education. I thank our elders for emphasizing the importance of good education for our children,” Mr. Cavuduadua stated, highlighting the community’s commitment to the education of its youth.
Last week, Peniasi’s brother Apenisa surprised their father by gifting him an air ticket to Australia, allowing him to celebrate Peniasi’s graduation in person. Apenisa, who is 29 and the oldest among five siblings, dedicated his degree to his father, acknowledging the sacrifices made for their education following the loss of their mother during their childhood.
In his words, “I’ve always tried to embody the values of hard work and determination instilled in us by our late mother.” He, along with his wife, Tenga Paueli, moved to Australia in January 2023 to pursue their studies. Peniasi’s graduation ceremony was further enriched by the presence of their father and youngest sister, who traveled from Fiji to share this significant moment.
Peniasi expressed heartfelt gratitude to God, ANU, and his family for their unwavering support throughout his academic journey. His achievement is not only a personal victory but also a celebration of the values of education and perseverance within his family and community. A festive family gathering is lined up to honor this milestone at their family estate in Nakoromakawa, Natubuniqio Village, Vugalei.
This story serves as an uplifting reminder of the power of education and family support, showcasing how collective values can pave the way for individual successes. It’s a narrative of hope, encouraging others in similar situations to pursue their educational goals, knowing that such achievements enrich not just individuals, but entire communities.
