A Second Chance: Former Cop Turns Plumber at 50

A Second Chance: Former Cop Turns Plumber at 50

A former police officer, Rusiate Pate, has embarked on a new chapter in his life by earning a National Certificate in Plumbing and Sheetmetal Level Three. At 50 years old, he was among the oldest graduates during the ceremony held at the Salvation Army Hall in Labasa, where 97 students received their diplomas.

Mr. Pate expressed that age should not hinder one’s desire to serve others. As a father of seven and a grandfather to seven grandchildren, his passion for helping his community has motivated him to enhance his skills in plumbing. He aims to assist Vunikura Village in Buca Bay, Cakaudrove, where he recognizes a pressing need for plumbing services.

He shared, “There are so many villagers who are in need of plumbing work, and I am happy to help them even at an old age.” Mr. Pate also encouraged younger individuals by stating, “If I can study to become a plumber at the age of 50, you can also do it.”

His journey back to education wasn’t without challenges, but Mr. Pate found great excitement and fulfillment in his studies. He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his wife, Mareweieta Ioane, who is also a police officer.

This inspiring narrative aligns with other similar stories of individuals overcoming adversity through education and hard work. For example, Semi Seruvakula, who faced setbacks due to peer pressure, recently graduated with a Certificate in Fabrication and Welding at Fiji National University. Both Pate and Seruvakula’s stories reflect the theme of resilience and highlight how pursuing education can provide new opportunities regardless of age or previous challenges.

Through his example, Mr. Pate illustrates that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams and contribute positively to the community, ultimately fostering a sense of hope and determination for others facing similar circumstances.
