A Royal Rename: The Battle Over AD Patel Stadium

Prince Charles Park in Nadi, which is set to be renamed King Charles Park, was originally called AD Patel Stadium. This point was raised by Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya during a parliamentary debate on Nadi Town Council’s annual report on Monday.

Koya emphasized the importance of remembering the original name, stating, “There is one thing that is forgotten, and I hope I am not wrong, but I am hoping this name is not forgotten within Prince Charles Park. The actual stadium was named AD Patel Stadium.” He noted that during his travels in and out of Nadi, he has not seen the name displayed, suggesting it has been removed.

He expressed concern over the omission, stating it would be disrespectful not to restore the stadium’s original name. “It is for someone who was part of our history and has done a lot for this particular country, and that name should remain on that particular stadium,” he said, hoping it would be reinstated.

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa acknowledged the need to change the name to King Charles Park due to the shift in the monarchy. He mentioned that the council has contacted the British High Commission regarding the protocol for the name change.
