The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, designed as a supportive environment for women cancer survivors, was inaugurated yesterday in Nabua, representing a crucial step toward aiding those affected by cancer.
Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of this new facility. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” she stated. “They can rest here and find nourishment. It’s a safe space where they can discuss their experiences and the challenges they face.”
Established in 2021, the NGO aims to assist women cancer survivors in their spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery. Ms. Vavataga explained that twice a year, the organization takes a different group of survivors to a hotel to foster relationships and build trust. Upon returning, participants engage in a three-week Bible study focusing on spiritual and emotional healing and the transformation of humanity.
Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso from Faith Harvest Church in Nausori, who officiated at the opening, commended the initiative. “Thank you for establishing this hub, providing a safe haven for those in need, a refuge where they can connect with others who care,” he remarked.
During the event, cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her inspiring journey, stating, “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive.” Her experience underscored the vital necessity for support systems like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m really grateful for this organization because after cancer treatment, it can be quite lonely,” she added.
Looking ahead, Ms. Vavataga expressed hopes of opening a hospice, acknowledging that today’s ribbon-cutting represents just the start of their mission. The Self Care Retreat Fiji relies on donations and partnerships to continue its work. “For this building, I even shaved my hair to raise funds,” she revealed, referencing her involvement in the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
