A New Era for the Flying Fijians? Peni Ravai Weighs In!

Peni Ravai, a seasoned prop and recent addition to the Fijian Drua, is embracing the opportunity to mentor younger talent within the Flying Fijians team. At 34 years old, he acknowledges that his time in the national jersey might be nearing its end, prompting him to prioritize the development of the next generation of Fijian front rowers.

Ravai spoke positively about the emerging talents he has seen, stating, “Age is catching up, so I’m just going to let the young boys get a chance.” He recognizes the coaching staff’s vision to build a new team in preparation for the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup. Despite contemplating his future, he expressed his unwavering commitment to the national team, saying, “If I do get selected, I will always say yes to representing my country.”

Reflecting on his return to rugby in Fiji, Ravai expressed joy at playing where it all began for him. He mentioned the notable differences he has observed in the Drua squad compared to his experiences playing in France. The combination of favorable weather and the youthful energy of his teammates continually inspires him, as he sees many eager to embrace the game.

Currently, Ravai is focusing on his rehabilitation following a challenging season with the Flying Fijians but remains enthusiastic about the forthcoming matches. He stated, “We play each game as it comes, and I am looking forward to playing my first game.”

In summary, Peni Ravai is poised to pass on the torch to younger players and reflects optimism for the future of Fijian rugby. His commitment to his country and the excitement of nurturing fresh talent could mark a turning point for the national team as they prepare for upcoming international challenges.
