A significant shift in Fiji’s tourism landscape has occurred with the acquisition of Tivua Island, a top destination for Captain Cook Cruises, by rival operator South Sea Cruises. Established over 35 years ago by the respected indigenous Fijian business leader Semi Koroilavesau, Captain Cook Cruises built a strong reputation by operating during the COVID pandemic when many competitors paused operations. The company had collaborated with Captain Cook Australia to elevate the local tourism sector.

Despite this legacy, the latest developments suggest that Fiji’s luxury expedition cruise market remains underdeveloped. The recent leasing of the MS Caledonian Sky, which was deemed too expensive by international customers, highlights some of the challenges Captain Cook faces in this competitive landscape.

However, the transition to South Sea Cruises has been warmly received by the industry’s leaders. Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, praised the strong marketing and resources provided by the new owners, expressing optimism about the future.

South Sea Cruises, owned by Fijian Holdings Limited, plans to undertake significant redevelopment of Tivua Island, closing it after May to enhance visitor experiences. The aim is to complement ongoing hotel and resort projects in the Nadi and Denarau areas, positioning Tivua Island as a premium destination.

This revitalization effort will take place over a two-year period, with a planned reopening in 2026 alongside the continuation of day cruise services provided by Captain Cook under its new manager, Robert Wade. South Sea Cruises is also set to introduce a new fast-boat experience in 2025.

Overall, while the changes might pose challenges to Captain Cook Cruises, they also represent an opportunity for the broader tourism industry in Fiji. The redevelopment of Tivua Island and the commitment to elevate visitor experiences could lead to a more robust tourism sector and attract more visitors to the stunning islands of Fiji.

In summary, the acquisition and redevelopment of Tivua Island may mark a pivot point for Fiji’s tourism, creating new experiences and fostering growth in the industry, which is crucial for its recovery and future prosperity.
