Dr. Vinesh Kumar has been appointed as the new Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry in Fiji, following a transparent selection process by the Public Service Commission (PSC). His appointment, confirmed by the PSC and endorsed by the Prime Minister on June 12, came after Dr. Kumar topped a merit-based selection from five candidates.
Previously, Dr. Kumar has held important positions, including Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways and CEO of the Sugar Research Institute. His extensive background in governance and policy is expected to bolster efforts aimed at revitalizing the sugar sector, which has faced challenges including production declines, and foster inclusive programs for all ethnic communities in Fiji.
PSC Chairman Luke Rokovada expressed confidence in Dr. Kumar’s leadership abilities. He noted that Dr. Kumar’s appointment signifies a commitment to improved governance within the sector and aims to enhance relationships with local farmers and stakeholders. This leadership change is viewed as a hopeful turning point for Fiji’s sugar industry, promoting collaboration and communication in an effort to address ongoing challenges.
Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh, stated that this appointment reflects the ministry’s focus on accountability and transparency, underscoring the aim for better public engagement moving forward. Overall, this development is seen as a positive step towards revitalizing the sugar industry while strengthening its connection with Fiji’s diverse communities.
