On Friday, Serua Island paused in honor of the installation of Ratu Tevita Mara Latianara as the new Turaga na Vunivalu of vanua o Korolevu, an event that attracted hundreds from surrounding areas. The atmosphere was a mix of excitement and deep respect as attendees gathered for this significant cultural occasion.

Distinguished guests included Ifereimi Vasu, Minister for iTaukei Affairs, and Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, Tui Namosi, both present to support the tradition and leadership transition. The event kicked off with a dedicated service held at the village church, led by former president of the Methodist Church, Reverend Ili Vunisuwai, who blessed the new paramount chief with prayers and well-wishes.

Following the dedication, traditional installation rites were performed, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the vanua o Korolevu. This ceremony is not just a formal recognition of Ratu Tevita’s position; it is also a celebration of cultural pride and a demonstration of the unity among the people of Serua Island.

This occasion echoes similar recent installations across Fiji that have also brought communities together to preserve heirloom traditions while fostering a sense of belonging. Such events not only rejuvenate community spirit but also promote collaboration and cultural identity, setting a hopeful tone for future governance.

Ratu Tevita’s ascension promises to infuse the community with renewed commitment to their cultural practices and shared values, facilitating a flourishing environment and strengthening ties within and among neighboring communities. The support shown from community members indicates a collective optimism towards the opportunities that lie ahead with Ratu Tevita as their leader.
