Ratu Josaia, aged 24, was officially installed as the new Tui Sabeto in the Nadi district on December 27, 1975, a significant event occurring 100 days after the passing of the previous Tui, Adi Josivini Naburenivanua. As reported in an article from The Fiji Times on January 3, 1976, Ratu Josaia succeeded his grandmother, thus taking his place as the thirteenth Tui Sabeto.
Ratu Josaia’s father, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, passed away in 1962 when Ratu Josaia was just 11 years old. Due to his young age at that time, he was unable to assume the title, and his grandmother stepped in to take on that responsibility. Ratu Josaia was part of a family of six siblings, and despite being the second oldest, his sister was ineligible for the chief title because she married someone outside of the chiefly ranks.
A special mataqali in Sabeto determined that Ratu Josaia was to be recognized as the Tui. The traditional installation ceremony brought together chiefs from across the Western Division, taking place in both church and village settings.
Ratu Josaia received his education at Sabeto Primary School, Jasper Williams School, and Lami Fijian School. He is married and has a daughter. Tragically, his in-laws, both educators, died in the sinking of the ship Uluilakeba.
During the installation ceremonies, Ratu Josaia participated in a traditional vigil, sitting in the chief’s house for four days and nights, supported with food and water. This period concluded on January 2, 1976, allowing him to emerge and engage with the community.
