Ratu Tevita Kapaiwai Uluilakeba Mara was recently installed as the new Tui Nayau, following a long-awaited ceremony on Nayau Island. His ascension to this esteemed position marks a historic resurgence of a chiefly title that had been vacant since the passing of his father, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who served as Fiji’s first prime minister.
In his first address following the traditional installation, Ratu Tevita echoed sentiments expressed by his late father back in 1969, urging the chiefs of Lau and surrounding islands to prioritize their responsibilities and lead with integrity for the benefit of their communities. He emphasized the critical role traditional leaders play in guiding their people, underscoring the notion that their decisions significantly impact those they govern.
Affectionately known as Roko Ului, he invoked a call to action for the chiefs to steer their communities correctly, stating that “the people depend on them for sound decisions.” The ceremony not only represents a symbolic renewal of leadership but also a reaffirmation of the Lau people’s cultural heritage and identity, bringing together various community members to celebrate their lineage and shared traditions.
The focus will soon shift to Ratu Tevita’s installation as the Lau paramount chief, which is set to take place at the Tubou ground on Lakeba Island. The community has actively engaged in preparations, eagerly anticipating this significant event as it promises both a celebration of tradition and an opportunity to strengthen community bonds.
Live coverage of the upcoming ceremony will be available on FBCTV and through pay-per-view services, ensuring a broad audience can witness this momentous occasion.
This installation embodies hope and revitalization for the Lau community, symbolizing a blend of respect for the past and aspirations for a prosperous future under Ratu Tevita’s guidance. As this new chapter begins, there’s a palpable sense of optimism as the Lau people come together to honor tradition while moving forward into new possibilities.
