Vunilagi has emerged as a potential site for a new airport in Vanua Levu, according to aviation experts. The proposal gained traction after Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and Parliament Speaker, offered land for the airport’s construction. Business leaders are optimistic about the project’s realization.
Avikash Pillay, president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce, is among those hopeful for the development. He stated, “Vunilagi is approximately a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and offers flat, spacious land. The current Savusavu Airport runway cannot accommodate larger aircraft due to limited land space, posing ongoing challenges for the tourism industry.” A larger airport in the region, which is a significant tourist destination in the Northern Division, is expected to attract more visitors.
Pillay noted that government officials are considering the potential of developing an airport at Vunilagi.
Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka mentioned last year that Nasarawaqa in Bua is another possible location for an international airport. Following the launch of the NaVualiku tourism development project, the World Bank has also identified other potential sites for an airport.
“As a government, we understand the community’s desire for an international airport, and we are actively exploring options,” Gavoka remarked, adding that an announcement regarding airport plans is anticipated by the end of the year.
