Tessa McKenzie, the creator of the Fijian flag, recently celebrated her milestone 90th birthday. The celebration coincided with a special ceremony marking the conclusion of SEEP’s Reflection and Cycle 2: 2022-2024 held at the Shangri-La Fijian Resort on Yanuca Island.
Ms. McKenzie, who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving board member and chair of the staffing committee for the Social Empowerment Education Program (SEEP), was recognized for her significant contributions to both the organization and the nation. SEEP referred to her as “a national treasure” for her pivotal role in designing the iconic Fiji flag.
The organization emphasized how Ms. McKenzie’s leadership, vision, and unwavering dedication have profoundly enhanced SEEP’s efforts, particularly in empowering communities throughout Fiji. The celebration was further enriched by the presence of Ms. McKenzie’s family, who traveled from abroad to join in the festivities.
Chantelle Khan, SEEP’s executive director, reflected on Ms. McKenzie’s long-lasting impact, saying, “Her tireless commitment to our mission and vision and her remarkable achievements, including the design of our Fiji Flag, inspire us all.” Mr. Khan extended warm birthday wishes on behalf of SEEP and the communities they support, thanking her for her enduring legacy.
