Salesia Ledua Daukana experienced an emotional moment witnessing her son, Inia Tabuavou, take the field for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. As a single mother from Baravi, Nadroga, she has raised Inia alone since the tragic passing of his father in 2013 when Inia was just in year 6. Now 22, Inia proudly wears the number 12 jersey for the Drua.

Daukana and her family made the trip to Lautoka to show their unwavering support for her son and the team, who faced challenging times having lost three consecutive matches. “We came as a family to support him and the team because they need encouragement,” she stated, displaying her deep belief that nothing is impossible and the team can bounce back from their setbacks.

Her motivation springs from her strong faith in God, constantly encouraging Inia to draw strength from belief and trust in the Lord. Tabuavou’s impressive journey began with his selection for the Fiji under-16 national team, which led to opportunities such as a scholarship to study in New Zealand. He went on to attend notable schools like Rotorua Boys’ High School and Westlake Boys’ High School, eventually joining the prestigious Racing 92 Academy in France’s Top 14.

Inia’s return to Fiji to play for the Drua is infused with his mother’s sacrifices and hard work. “No matter the results, we will always stand by them. We believe in them,” Daukana remarked. She sees every match as a testament to love, faith, and perseverance, illustrating a poignant story of resilience and familial support in the realm of sports.

This narrative resonates with other inspiring stories, such as that of Meleama Tumalevu, a young winger for the Ba girl’s Under-14 rugby team, who also showcases courage while dedicating her games to her late mother. Such young athletes display remarkable determination to overcome personal challenges, just as Inia does, embodying hope and the powerful bonds of family.

Tabuavou’s journey serves as a reminder that with dedication, resilience, and community support, athletes can strive for greatness while honoring their roots and loved ones.
