Miliakere Nai’s unwavering dedication to her family and community shines through her daily life in Nalidi Village, located in Nakorotubu, Ra. As a devoted stay-at-home mother of five, she not only supports her husband, the village headman, but also plays an integral role in the village’s social fabric.
Once aspiring to be a nurse, Miliakere’s dream was set aside when family obligations called her back home to care for her sick and ageing parents. “I failed my form six exam and wanted to repeat because I wanted to be a nurse,” Miliakere shared, reflecting on her past. However, she found fulfillment in her responsibilities at home, stating, “But I guess God had another calling in my life and I’m glad he gave me the honour of caring for mum and dad.”
In her role as radini turaga ni koro, or the headman’s wife, Miliakere takes on numerous responsibilities. She manages the household and welcomes visitors to the village, demonstrating hospitality to both civil servants and community members alike. Her days are filled with early morning rituals, starting at 5 AM to prepare meals for her children. With two secondary and two primary school-aged kids, Miliakere is deeply involved in their education. Her eldest son is poised to return to university after taking a break to help with farming during the pandemic.
Miliakere emphasizes the importance of education for her children, wishing for them to achieve what she and her husband were unable to. “We do not want our children to go through what we did,” she said, expressing hope for their future. “I want my children to do better than us and get well-paid jobs.”
Beyond her family, Miliakere also leads the women of the village, balancing her leadership with the exhaustive demands of home life. “My day can be very busy,” she admitted, but her commitment to her community fuels her motivation. “I may not be a full-time employee but I am privileged to work full-time for my family, people and vanua.”
