Sunita Kumar, a dedicated women golfer and the vice-principal of Ratu Navula College, is preparing for a challenging competition at the Fiji PGA Gecko’s Trucking President’s Cup today at Denarau Golf Club. With the aim of concluding the year on a high note, Kumar expressed her determination to perform well, stating, “I will do my best and finish off strongly this year.”

In an exciting twist, she will be going up against her daughter, Riana Kumar, who is the current champion of the Denarau Golf Open. Sunita acknowledged the challenge, saying, “My daughter is the best, and I know the challenge from her,” showcasing the strong competitive spirit in their family.

The professionals kicked off the tournament yesterday with a 36-hole challenge, while the women’s and amateur divisions will compete over 18 holes today. Fiji Golf president Amitesh Chandra highlighted the event’s importance and the healthy competition it brings. He noted that professionals are contending for a $10,000 prize pool, with the winner receiving $1,800.

Defending champion and Fiji PGA Order of Merit leader Tomasi Tuivuna is considered a frontrunner but will face stiff competition from Roneel Prakash and Vikrant Chandra. Last week’s Denarau Pro-Am winner, Abid Hussein, is also a notable contender. Riana Kumar is the favorite in the women’s division, given her esteemed low handicap.

On the men’s amateur side, competitors are gearing up in the absence of Shakil Pillay, who is in Japan preparing for the NEC Master of Amateurs Golf Championship set for January 2025 in Melbourne. Key amateur contenders include Nitulesh Mali, Praveer Chand, and Ashish Chand.

With approximately 100 players participating, the event promises to deliver an exciting day of golf at Denarau. This tournament not only offers a platform for golf talent to shine but also emphasizes the spirit of family competition.

Overall, as the tournament unfolds, it stands as a celebration of skill, determination, and community, with players eager to showcase their talents in the beautiful setting of Fiji.
