It is with deep sadness and gratitude that we celebrate the life of Anil Valera, a cherished musician, mentor, and friend who passed away recently in Vancouver, Canada. Anil’s legacy, much like a beautiful melody, continues to resonate in the hearts of those he loved and inspired.

Anil was a founding member of Ulysses, a band that emerged in Fiji during the vibrant musical scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s. As not just a guitarist, but the quiet heartbeat of the band, he had an understated presence that elevated the music and the musicians around him. His approach to music was rooted in connection and expression rather than seeking applause or recognition.

Those fortunate enough to have known Anil can attest to his generosity. He freely offered his time, talent, and trust, nurturing countless young musicians who walked away with not just their first chords but also the confidence to pursue their own musical paths. Anil’s character exemplified humility and depth; he communicated through heartfelt actions that spoke louder than any words.

Though Anil eventually settled in Canada, the spirit of Fiji remained entrenched in his heart, alongside the bonds he cherished with his bandmates and fans. His passing is felt as a profound loss, yet there is solace in knowing he lived a life defined by kindness, purpose, and authenticity.

Among his bandmates, Henry Foon reflected on their initial performances, noting Anil’s role as not just a talented musician but a dedicated organizer who always introduced fresh material during rehearsals. Anil made impactful contributions even in his later years, partnering with fellow band member Chanel Columbus in Vancouver, where he transitioned to playing keyboards while maintaining his signature vocal style.

Colin Deoki fondly remembered Anil as a magnetic presence and a rare talent, recalling how Anil even penned one of Fiji’s first anti-nuclear protest songs in the early ’70s—demonstrating his artistry and commitment to social issues. Anil’s music deeply touched souls and built enduring friendships, fostering connections that have stood the test of time.

His other bandmates, John Shankaran and Patrick Chung, echoed similar sentiments, reflecting on the invaluable mentorship and camaraderie Anil provided over the years. Whether during late-night jam sessions or conversations over drinks, Anil’s warmth made those around him feel special and valued.

Anil Valera’s legacy as a musician and mentor will continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that his spirit lives on in the music and memories he created. In honoring his life, it becomes evident that his contributions to the musical world will remain timeless, reminding us of the power of community, connection, and artistry. Rest in peace, Anil. Your music and your heart will forever resonate with all of us.
