Hundreds gathered in the chiefly village of Navuso in Naitasiri to pay their last respects to Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, the late Turaga na Qaranivalu. He was laid to rest in the traditional burial ground known as Natukilagi, which holds cultural significance as a site built by mataisau (tradesmen).

During the eulogy, speakers remembered Ratu Inoke as a man of deep faith and a unifying figure for the people of Naitasiri. His role in fostering a love for rugby was especially celebrated, recalling the establishment of the Naitasiri Rugby Union in 1995, which contributed to community spirit and engagement.

Ratu Inoke had a long-standing legacy, having held the title of Turaga na Qaranivalu since 1997. He was recognized as a dedicated member of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), actively participating in meetings since 2022 and advocating for the welfare of the i-Taukei people. His political journey included serving in the interim cabinet under Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase as Minister for Regional Development and Multi-Ethnic Affairs from 2000 to 2001.

Despite facing challenges, including a past conviction related to the 2000 coup attempt, which he later received a presidential pardon for in 2023, Ratu Inoke’s contributions remained significant in terms of community healing and leadership.

Ratu Inoke passed away at the age of 78 on April 13 after battling pancreatic cancer. His funeral not only marked a moment of mourning for the community but also served as an occasion to reflect on his enduring impact on the Naitasiri province. Many hope that his legacy will inspire continued unity and resilience among the people, especially as they navigate the complexities of future challenges together.

The outpouring of respect from the community demonstrates the profound legacy he leaves behind, reinforcing the idea that strong leadership and community engagement can foster a shared identity and purpose.
