Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka delivered a heartfelt eulogy at the funeral of Parmesh Chand, a distinguished civil servant, who passed away at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva. Rabuka commemorated Chand’s unwavering dedication and loyalty to Fiji, describing him as a significant figure in the civil service for over two decades.
Chand, also known as PS Chand, rejoined the civil service after the 2022 General Election and was appointed as Fiji’s Ambassador-designate to Japan before his untimely death. The Prime Minister recognized Chand’s vital contributions to the implementation of various civil service reforms, including the establishment of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the reestablishment of the Higher Salaries Commission. His leadership and vision were pivotal in advancing good governance and public sector reform.
The outpouring of respect for Chand from various sectors of society is a testament to his impact on Fiji’s public service landscape. As Luke Rokovada, chairperson of the Public Service Commission, noted, Chand’s commitment to justice and humanity solidified his legacy as a “gentle giant”.
Chand’s final rites were held in Nukuloa, Ba, surrounded by family and friends who remembered him not only for his professional achievements but also for the kindness and guidance he provided to others. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the contributions individuals can make to their communities, reflecting the fragility of life and the need to honor those who dedicate themselves to public service.
In light of this tragedy, there is hope that his legacy inspires future generations of leaders to uphold the values of service, commitment, and international cooperation, particularly as Fiji strengthens its relationships on the global stage.
